Part A: In order Divide. Think of the matching multiplication fact.

  1. 4 ÷ 4 = 1
  2. 8 ÷ 4 = 2
  3. 12 ÷ 4 = 3
  4. 16 ÷ 4 = 4
  5. 20 ÷ 4 = 5
  6. 24 ÷ 4 = 6
  7. 28 ÷ 4 = 7
  8. 32 ÷ 4 = 8
  9. 36 ÷ 4 = 9
  10. 40 ÷ 4 = 10
  11. 44 ÷ 4 = 11
  12. 48 ÷ 4 = 12

Part B: Mixed up Divide.

  1. 32 ÷ 4 = 8
  2. 28 ÷ 4 = 7
  3. 4 ÷ 4 = 1
  4. 24 ÷ 4 = 6
  5. 0 ÷ 4 = 0
  6. 20 ÷ 4 = 5
  7. 40 ÷ 4 = 10
  8. 44 ÷ 4 = 11
  9. 48 ÷ 4 = 12
  10. 16 ÷ 4 = 4
  11. 36 ÷ 4 = 9
  12. 12 ÷ 4 = 3

Part C: Missing number Write the number that makes each fact true.

  1. 48 ÷ 4 = 12
  2. 8 ÷ 4 = 2
  3. 44 ÷ 4 = 11
  4. 36 ÷ 4 = 9
  5. 28 ÷ 4 = 7
  6. 32 ÷ 4 = 8

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Halve, then halve again. For 36 ÷ 4, half of 36 is 18 and half of 18 is 9.
  • Pair each problem with its multiplication fact: 32 ÷ 4 = 8 because 4 × 8 = 32.
  • Every dividend on this sheet ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. If a student writes a dividend that is odd in Part C, the answer is wrong.
  • For larger dividends like 44 and 48, the halving strategy is often faster than recalling the fact.

Common mistakes

  • Halving only once, so 28 ÷ 4 becomes 14. Ask the student to say "halve, halve" and count the steps on two fingers.
  • Mixing up 24 ÷ 4 = 6 and 28 ÷ 4 = 7. Check by multiplying back with the 4 times table.

What to practice next

Try dividing by 8, which is halving three times, or go back to the 4 times table for any facts that were slow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the trick for dividing by 4?

Divide by 2 twice. 40 ÷ 4: half of 40 is 20, and half of 20 is 10.

Should students learn divide by 2 before divide by 4?

Yes. The halve-twice strategy depends on halving being quick and accurate.
