Tips for teachers and parents

  • Teach "double, then double again." For 4 × 6, double 6 to get 12, then double 12 to get 24.
  • The last digits of the answers repeat in a cycle: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0. If an answer does not end in one of these digits, it is wrong.
  • Write the matching 2s fact beside each Part A problem, such as 2 × 7 = 14 next to 4 × 7, so the student sees the answer double.
  • In Part C, halve twice: for 4 × ___ = 32, half of 32 is 16 and half of 16 is 8.

Common mistakes

  • Doubling only once, so 4 × 7 comes out as 14. Ask the student to say both steps out loud.
  • Confusing 4 × 6 = 24 with 4 × 7 = 28. Use the double-double check on any answer the student is unsure of.

What to practice next

Try the 8 times table next, which is one more doubling, or the 5 times table if you want an easier table first.
