Tips for teachers and parents

  • Use "5 groups plus 1 more group." For 6 × 7, find 5 × 7 = 35, then add one more 7 to get 42.
  • Double the 3s: 6 × 8 is double 3 × 8, and double 24 is 48.
  • Point out the even pattern: 6 × 2 = 12, 6 × 4 = 24, 6 × 6 = 36, 6 × 8 = 48. When 6 multiplies 2, 4, 6 or 8, the answer ends in that same digit.
  • Give 6 × 7 = 42 and 6 × 8 = 48 extra practice, because students often swap them.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the wrong extra group in the 5-plus-1 strategy, such as 6 × 7 = 35 + 6. The extra group is one more 7, so the answer is 42.
  • Mixing up 6 × 7 and 6 × 8. Use the even pattern: 6 × 8 must end in 8, so it is 48.

What is the trick for the 6 times table?

Multiply by 5, then add one more group. 6 × 9 is 45 + 9, which is 54.

Why is 6 × 7 hard to remember?

It does not follow the even pattern that 6 × 6 and 6 × 8 do, so students need the 5-plus-1 strategy or memory for it.
