Tips for teachers and parents

  • Ask "3 times what makes this number?" For 27 ÷ 3, the student thinks 3 × 9 = 27, so the answer is 9.
  • Use the digit-sum check. Apart from 0, every dividend on this sheet has digits that add to 3, 6 or 9, because each one is in the 3 times table.
  • Practice fact families together: 3 × 8 = 24, 8 × 3 = 24, 24 ÷ 3 = 8 and 24 ÷ 8 = 3.
  • Use counters for students who are unsure: share 21 counters into 3 equal groups and count one group.

Common mistakes

  • Answering with the dividend's neighbor in the 3s, such as 24 ÷ 3 = 7. Check by multiplying back: 7 × 3 is 21, not 24.
  • Confusing ÷ 3 with − 3, so 15 ÷ 3 becomes 12. Remind the student that division asks how many groups of 3.
