Part A: In order Multiply. Look for the pattern as you go.
- 10 × 1 = 10
- 10 × 2 = 20
- 10 × 3 = 30
- 10 × 4 = 40
- 10 × 5 = 50
- 10 × 6 = 60
- 10 × 7 = 70
- 10 × 8 = 80
- 10 × 9 = 90
- 10 × 10 = 100
- 10 × 11 = 110
- 10 × 12 = 120
Part B: Mixed up Multiply. The facts are out of order and some are flipped.
- 12 × 10 = 120
- 8 × 10 = 80
- 10 × 3 = 30
- 10 × 11 = 110
- 10 × 4 = 40
- 6 × 10 = 60
- 5 × 10 = 50
- 9 × 10 = 90
- 10 × 5 = 50
- 1 × 10 = 10
- 10 × 1 = 10
- 10 × 2 = 20
Part C: Missing factor Write the number that makes each fact true.
- 10 × 2 = 20
- 10 × 6 = 60
- 10 × 12 = 120
- 10 × 11 = 110
- 10 × 10 = 100
- 10 × 5 = 50
Tips for teachers and parents
- Explain the zero instead of only saying "add a zero." When you multiply by 10, each digit moves one place to the left and a zero holds the ones place. 10 × 7 is 7 tens, which is 70.
- Use base-ten blocks or dimes: 10 × 6 is six ten-rods or six dimes, which is 60.
- Show that the 10s give the 5s for free: 5 × 8 is half of 10 × 8.
- In Part C, ask "how many tens are in 90?" to solve 10 × ___ = 90.
Common mistakes
- Writing 10 × 12 as 102 or 1020. Show 12 tens as 120 using place value columns.
- Adding 10 instead of multiplying, such as 10 × 4 = 14. Read the problem as "4 groups of 10."
What to practice next
Use the 10s with the 5s to learn the 9s (10 groups minus 1) and the 11s (10 groups plus 1).
Frequently asked questions
Why do we add a zero when multiplying by 10?
Multiplying by 10 makes each digit worth ten times as much, so every digit shifts one place to the left. The zero fills the empty ones place.
What grade learns the 10 times table?
Students usually count by tens in grade 2 and multiply by multiples of 10 in grade 3.
Is the answer key included?
