Part A Divide. Write the quotient and the remainder.

  1. 78 ÷ 4 = 19 R 2
  2. 24 ÷ 9 = 2 R 6
  3. 76 ÷ 9 = 8 R 4
  4. 17 ÷ 2 = 8 R 1
  5. 34 ÷ 5 = 6 R 4
  6. 38 ÷ 6 = 6 R 2
  7. 35 ÷ 9 = 3 R 8
  8. 32 ÷ 6 = 5 R 2
  9. 53 ÷ 8 = 6 R 5
  10. 10 ÷ 3 = 3 R 1
  11. 45 ÷ 4 = 11 R 1
  12. 48 ÷ 5 = 9 R 3

Part B Divide. Check: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.

  1. 31 ÷ 6 = 5 R 1
  2. 34 ÷ 8 = 4 R 2
  3. 27 ÷ 6 = 4 R 3
  4. 28 ÷ 6 = 4 R 4
  5. 85 ÷ 6 = 14 R 1
  6. 31 ÷ 8 = 3 R 7
  7. 83 ÷ 6 = 13 R 5
  8. 74 ÷ 5 = 14 R 4
  9. 15 ÷ 8 = 1 R 7
  10. 79 ÷ 5 = 15 R 4
  11. 49 ÷ 9 = 5 R 4
  12. 16 ÷ 5 = 3 R 1

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Find the nearest fact below the dividend. For 38 ÷ 5, the closest 5s fact under 38 is 35, so the quotient is 7 and the remainder is 3.
  • Check every answer with "quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend." For 38 ÷ 5: 7 × 5 + 3 = 38.
  • The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor. A remainder of 6 in a ÷ 5 problem means the quotient is too small.
  • Use counters for the first few problems: share 38 counters into 5 groups and see how many are left over.

Common mistakes

  • A remainder that is equal to or larger than the divisor, such as 38 ÷ 5 = 6 R 8. Another group of 5 fits, so the answer is 7 R 3.
  • Writing the remainder as the difference between the divisor and the dividend. Use the check step on every problem.

What to practice next

Move on to 2-digit by 1-digit division with remainders, which uses dividends up to 99.

Frequently asked questions

What is a remainder in division?

It is the amount left over when a number cannot be shared equally. 17 ÷ 5 is 3 with 2 left over, written 3 R 2.

How do you check a division with remainder answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. The result should equal the number you started with.

What grade learns division with remainders?

Grade 4. Common Core standard 4.NBT.B.6 covers whole-number quotients and remainders.
