Tips for teachers and parents
- Split the bottom number into tens and ones. For 46 × 23, find 46 × 3 = 138, then 46 × 20 = 920, then add: 1,058.
- Teach the zero placeholder on the second line. Because the 2 in 23 means 20, the second partial product starts with a 0 in the ones column.
- Use an area model for students who are not ready for the standard method: a 2-by-2 grid with 40 and 6 across the top and 20 and 3 down the side.
- Estimate by rounding both numbers: 46 × 23 is close to 50 × 20 = 1,000.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the zero placeholder, so the second partial product lines up under the first. The total then comes out far too small.
- Mixing the carries from the two partial products. Have the student cross out the first row's carries before starting the second row.
What to practice next
Try 3-digit by 2-digit multiplication, which uses the same two-row method with longer partial products.
Frequently asked questions
How do you do 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication?
Multiply the top number by the ones digit, then by the tens digit with a zero placeholder, and add the two results.
Why is there a zero on the second line?
The second line multiplies by the tens digit, so the result is a number of tens. The zero keeps every digit in the correct place value column.
Why are there only 9 problems?
Each problem needs space for two partial products and the addition. Fewer problems with room to work produce fewer careless errors.
