Tips for teachers and parents
- Teach the carry as moving tens. In 47 × 3, the ones give 7 × 3 = 21: write the 1 in the ones column and carry the 2 tens.
- Write the carried digit small, above the tens column, so the student remembers to add it.
- Order matters in the tens column: multiply first, then add the carry. For 47 × 3, 4 × 3 = 12, plus the 2 carried, makes 14 tens.
- Estimate first. 47 × 3 is about 50 × 3 = 150, so an answer like 1,221 is clearly wrong.
Common mistakes
- Adding the carry before multiplying, such as (4 + 2) × 3 = 18 tens for 47 × 3. Ask the student to say "multiply, then add" for every tens column.
- Forgetting the carry altogether, which gives 121 for 47 × 3. Have the student circle each carried digit once it has been added.
What to practice next
When the carry is routine, try 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication, which uses the same steps across one more column.
Frequently asked questions
What is regrouping in multiplication?
When a column's product is 10 or more, the tens move to the next column. In 36 × 4, 6 × 4 = 24, so 4 stays in the ones and 2 tens move to the tens column.
Why do students get regrouping wrong?
Most errors come from adding the carried number before multiplying, or from forgetting it. Writing the carry small above the next column helps with both.
